{"id":1145,"date":"2014-04-04T15:30:38","date_gmt":"2014-04-04T20:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=1145"},"modified":"2014-05-13T11:19:09","modified_gmt":"2014-05-13T16:19:09","slug":"fitbit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=1145","title":{"rendered":"FITBIT"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fitbit1-1380717408.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1146\" alt=\"fitbit1-1380717408\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fitbit1-1380717408.jpg\" width=\"620\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fitbit1-1380717408.jpg 620w, https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fitbit1-1380717408-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>RIP: \u00a0FitBit<\/p>\n<p>I gave up.<\/p>\n<p>My <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitbit.com\/one?gclid=CPe-_5TVx70CFWZo7AodujoA0g\" target=\"_blank\">Fitbit band<\/a> sits on my disheveled desk face down in the havoc that is my basement. \u00a0It is there with its plastic arms pointed emptily toward the sky like a dead bug one would find in a room corner.<\/p>\n<p>Rest in peace.<\/p>\n<p>My wrists are now bracelet free. \u00a0No more &#8220;tap, tap&#8221; to check on my status. \u00a0No more checking on my iPhone app for my daily step count. \u00a0No more waking up by wrist vibration. \u00a0(That last one was actually pretty cool.)<\/p>\n<p>And I feel better for it.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if FitBit will make it. \u00a0A lot of people like it and have fun with it. \u00a0But it didn&#8217;t work for me.<\/p>\n<p>First, it told me things I already knew. \u00a0I would sit and pull up my FitBit data. \u00a0&#8220;You walked \/ ran a lot steps today!&#8221; it would report. \u00a0&#8220;Yup, knew that,&#8221; I thought. \u00a0Another day another check with the app. \u00a0&#8220;You didn&#8217;t do squat today,&#8221; it scolded. \u00a0&#8220;Yup, knew that,&#8221; I thought again.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a pretty active guy. \u00a0I run, work out, stay pretty active. \u00a0I also am a modest work-a-holic. \u00a0I travel a lot. \u00a0I am forgetful but good with short-term memory. \u00a0I typically can recall what I did each day. \u00a0That is, I&#8217;m quite aware of how active I am. \u00a0At least I think I am. \u00a0FitBit wasn&#8217;t telling me anything that I couldn&#8217;t figure out with a few seconds of focused thought.<\/p>\n<p>Second, FitBit didn&#8217;t give me any particularly insightful analysis as to why I was sedentary one day and hyper-active another. \u00a0Perhaps I was expecting too much. \u00a0But it would have been great if there was something there that said, &#8220;you know, every time you miss your morning run then you&#8217;ve a 50% chance of being a couch potato all day.&#8221; \u00a0Or something like that. \u00a0 But again, that would be information that I could figure out without strapping an electrode to my wrist. \u00a0Fact is I already know that if I don&#8217;t do my morning run there&#8217;s a 50\/50 chance there won&#8217;t be any workout in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I came to the realization that the wristband was more a lifestyle and fashion statement than health device. \u00a0At least for me. \u00a0I wore it because I thought it was a cool thing to do. \u00a0I guess it is. \u00a0But I also found it to be a pain in the ass.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say that wearable technology &#8211; particularly wearable fitness technology &#8211; is the new, new thing. \u00a0I guess so. \u00a0They are experts, aren&#8217;t they? \u00a0But it so far isn&#8217;t working for me. \u00a0My observation is that these types of things work for those who are either very competitive or very complacent when it comes to fitness. \u00a0If you are competitive, you enjoy posting step counts on Facebook pages and challenging those &#8220;so you think you&#8217;re fit?&#8221; friends. \u00a0If you are complacent you need something like a string around your finger to get you to remember to do your workout.<\/p>\n<p>I am both but would prefer not to have a machine constantly remind me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RIP: \u00a0FitBit I gave up.
