{"id":1170,"date":"2014-06-05T08:01:20","date_gmt":"2014-06-05T13:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=1170"},"modified":"2014-06-05T08:59:48","modified_gmt":"2014-06-05T13:59:48","slug":"wonder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=1170","title":{"rendered":"Wonder"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/wonder.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1171\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/wonder-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"wonder\" width=\"461\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a>\n<p>Yesterday I came home and went for a walk with my one-year-old grandson, Marlowe.<\/p>\n<p>In the next 90 minutes Marlowe reacquainted me with something we all had once and have, to our detriment, lost.<\/p>\n<p>Wonder!<\/p>\n<p>It took us about fifteen minutes to navigate the stoop down to the sidewalk.\u00a0 Marlowe\u2019s better at going up stairs than down them.\u00a0 But it wasn\u2019t that it.\u00a0 There was an iron handrail that he had to grab.\u00a0 He stopped and tugged on it a bit.\u00a0 Slid his hand down the cool metal.\u00a0 Gave it a big whack a couple of times.\u00a0 Then he turned to look at me with a big toothy grin.<\/p>\n<p>Wow!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d never seen anyone appreciate and marvel at a simple metal hand rail like that.<\/p>\n<p>We ambled down the sidewalk.\u00a0 We stopped at a patch of grass and I showed Marlow how you can pluck a blade and roll it between your fingers.\u00a0 And for the next fifteen minutes that is exactly what we did.\u00a0 For Marlowe, each tug, each blade, each twist between his chubby fingers was an absolute joy.<\/p>\n<p>Amazing!<\/p>\n<p>He spotted some bird fiddling with the leaves and debris in a neighbor\u2019s gutter.\u00a0 His hand shot out and he pointed to the birds.\u00a0 \u201cBAH!\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cBirds,\u201d I replied.\u00a0 \u201cBAH!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBAH!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBAH!\u201d he squealed.\u00a0 Each was said with utter astonishment.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure it wasn\u2019t the first time he saw a bird, but it sure seemed like it!\u00a0 And so we sat for God knows how long, just looking at the birds punctuated occasionally by Marlowe\u2019s \u201cBAH!\u201d after which he would turn to me with an expression that read, \u201cWow, Grandpa, did you see that?\u00a0 Whoa!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There were plenty of other adventures.\u00a0 A branch became a broom and Marlowe intently and joyously learned how to knock things off the sidewalk with it.\u00a0 Ants were this astounding phenomenon that we followed with glee and delight.<\/p>\n<p>And every time he would look at me and his whole countenance could be captured in one word:\u00a0 Amazing!<\/p>\n<p>One of Louis C.K.\u2019s more famous skits is called \u201cEverything is amazing and nobody\u2019s happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"502\" height=\"377\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uEY58fiSK8E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I think why that skit became so popular is because it is true, and we know it to be true, and we\u2019re somehow sad that we\u2019ve lost that sense of simple wonder and delight that is the world around us.\u00a0 We analyze and quantify and qualify everything until we have squeezed to death and blinded ourselves to the essential amazement that lies in just about everything.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nyti.ms\/1i0gvmm\" target=\"_blank\">In a recent lament<\/a>, writer Anne Lamott said about our data-driven lives, \u201cWhat this stuff steals is our aliveness,\u201d &#8230; \u201cGrids, spreadsheets and algorithms take away the sensory connection to our lives, where our feet are, what we\u2019re seeing, all the raw materials of life, which by their very nature are disorganized.\u201d<br \/>\nThe world around us is truly amazing.\u00a0 It is only when we approach it with curiosity and wonder that we really see it, and begin to relearn what it is to be human.<\/p>\n<p>So thanks, Marlowe.\u00a0 You\u2019re truly amazing!\u00a0 And so is everything else.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I came home and went for a walk with my one-year-old grandson, Marlowe.
