{"id":1503,"date":"2017-01-11T09:32:38","date_gmt":"2017-01-11T14:32:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=1503"},"modified":"2017-01-22T17:38:59","modified_gmt":"2017-01-22T22:38:59","slug":"truth-takes-a-beating-but-no-lie-lives-forever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=1503","title":{"rendered":"Truth Takes a Beating \u2026 But No Lie Lives Forever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1512\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/The-Truth-Is-The-Truth.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/The-Truth-Is-The-Truth.png 640w, https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/The-Truth-Is-The-Truth-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the famous exchange between Jesus of Nazareth and the Roman ruler Pontius Pilate, Jesus is recorded as claiming \u201ceveryone on the side of truth, listens to me.\u201d Pilate dismissively responds, \u201cWhat is truth?\u201d and walks out of the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Truth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=880\">It has never been very popular<\/a>. \u00a0It is taking a particular beating these days.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Consider this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Two years ago Twitter said that 23 million of its 271 million users were not people, but \u201cbots\u201d \u2013 programs that automatically generate content based on an algorithm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to BuzzFeed founder, Craig Silverman, during the recent election, \u201cfake news\u201d was more popular than \u201creal news.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Total Facebook engagement with the top twenty \u201cfake news\u201d election stories was greater than the top twenty \u201creal news\u201d stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the independent, Pulitzer-prize winning watchdog organization PolitiFact, 70 percent of the U.S. president-elect\u2019s campaign statements were rated as Mostly False, False or Pants on Fire False. And he won!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But it is not just a campaign thing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Recently we\u2019ve seen Volkswagen claim their diesel engines to be environmentally friendly. But they weren\u2019t. There was the Toshiba executive who said they made an extra $2 billion in earnings. But they didn\u2019t. And then there was Wells Fargo who gave extra credit cards.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Without asking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Truth isn\u2019t popular. It exposes you to seeing and hearing things you don\u2019t like.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That you are not perfect.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That you are oftentimes wrong.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That you make mistakes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That sometimes you hurt people \u2013 maybe many.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That whatever it is, most of the time it\u2019s not about you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We don\u2019t like Truth. So we avoid it. We cover it up. We change the subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We won&#8217;t admit to lying.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That would be wrong (l<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">ying that is).\u00a0<\/span>So we give lying a different name.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We call it \u201cfake news.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Or the latest, &#8220;alternative facts.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What are they? \u00a0Truthfully? \u00a0They are lies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But don\u2019t despair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Truth has an annoying way of hanging around. Just when you think you\u2019ve beaten it, killed it and buried it \u2026 Truth shows up. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Maybe not the next day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or the next. But one day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And at some point, things either are or are not. \u00a0No amount of prevarication or mendacity can prevent Truth from having the last word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I&#8217;m betting on truth. \u00a0It might lose a battle or two but it always wins the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Martin Luther King Jr. was fond of quoting Thomas Carlyle who wrote \u201cNo lie can live forever!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That, I believe, is true.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the famous exchange between Jesus of Nazareth and the Roman ruler Pontius Pilate, Jesus is recorded as claiming \u201ceveryone on the side of truth, listens to me.\u201d Pilate dismissively responds, \u201cWhat is truth?\u201d and walks out of the room.
