{"id":301,"date":"2008-10-28T03:01:52","date_gmt":"2008-10-28T10:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=301"},"modified":"2008-10-28T03:01:52","modified_gmt":"2008-10-28T10:01:52","slug":"video-nation-and-the-large-advertising-dwarf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=301","title":{"rendered":"Video Nation and the (Large) Advertising Dwarf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If it isn&#8217;t on video, then perhaps it didn&#8217;t happen.\u00a0 And if it happened &#8230; which of course it didn&#8217;t because it wasn&#8217;t videotaped &#8230; and you can&#8217;t replay it &#8230; then it surely couldn&#8217;t be important.<\/p>\n<p>Put another way &#8230; if it is not on YouTube then forgetaboutit.<\/p>\n<p>That could be one of many lessons from this political season.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, there was traditional media.\u00a0 And thanks to the generosity of millions of Americans who, despite the economy tanking, their houses being foreclosed, and their retirement funds evaporating &#8230; these same Americans seemed to have aninsatiable desire,\u00a0 to sign up and happily send their hard earned money (unless, of course, they worked on Wall Street) to the Obama campaign &#8212; there was plenty of advertising.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/10\/27\/business\/media\/27carr.html?scp=2&amp;sq=david%20carr&amp;st=cse\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>David Carr at the New York Times<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>By some estimates, Senator Obama will have spent $250 million on local, cable and network television in just five months, a rate of advertising that outstrips Burger King, Apple and Gap on an annualized basis. And it dwarfs the $188 million that President Bush spent in 2004.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/gnome-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft alignnone size-medium wp-image-302\" style=\"float: left; margin: 8px;\" title=\"gnome-1\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/gnome-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/gnome-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/gnome-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/gnome-1.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 142px) 100vw, 142px\" \/><\/a>But <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/blog\/ellen-mcgirt\/strike-indicator\/brand-obama-thrills-broadcasters-record-ad-spend-cheap-video-and-\" target=\"_blank\">Ellen McGirt of Fast Company<\/a><\/strong> goes on to say that while the Obama ad spend dwarfed brands and Bush I, the Obama YouTube production dwarfed their dwarfing of &#8230; whatever &#8230; you get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>So I went on YouTube.\u00a0 The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/barackobamadotcom?ob=4\" target=\"_blank\">Barak Obama channel<\/a><\/strong> has 1,678 <span class=\"grayText\">videos and 107,595<\/span><span class=\"grayText\"> subscribers.\u00a0 McGirt estimages that all total the campaign&#8217;s videos have had nearly 90 million views.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>90 million views.\u00a0 At likely a fraction of the $250 million in advertising.\u00a0 And &#8212; thanks to YouTube &#8212; will stay up and available far longer than the 30-second lead-in spot to CSI.<\/p>\n<p>So get out your flip video cameras, ladies and gentlemen.\u00a0 Start taping.\u00a0 Start uploading.\u00a0 Go crazy.<\/p>\n<p>And just in case &#8230; if you have a quarter of a billion lying around &#8230; buy some advertising too.<\/p>\n<p>Just in case.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If it isn&#8217;t on video, then perhaps it didn&#8217;t happen.\u00a0 And if it happened &#8230; which of course it didn&#8217;t because it wasn&#8217;t videotaped &#8230; and you can&#8217;t replay it &#8230; then it surely couldn&#8217;t be important.
