{"id":305,"date":"2008-11-16T17:51:36","date_gmt":"2008-11-17T00:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=305"},"modified":"2008-12-27T15:03:54","modified_gmt":"2008-12-27T22:03:54","slug":"brand-bail-out-meets-incompetence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=305","title":{"rendered":"Brand Bail Out Meets Brand Incompetence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s bail out the auto industry.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve done it before and it was &#8220;successful&#8221;.\u00a0 Looking back at the 1979 government-sponsored bailout of Chrysler &#8230; a few surprises.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/dunce_cap.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft alignnone size-medium wp-image-306\" style=\"float: left; margin: 8px;\" title=\"dunce_cap\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/dunce_cap-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/dunce_cap-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/dunce_cap.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>Guess who opposed bailing out the auto industry?\u00a0 It was &#8230; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Motors_Corporation\" target=\"_blank\">General Motors<\/a><\/strong>!\u00a0 Then <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/article\/20081112\/OPINION01\/811120432\/1008\" target=\"_blank\">GM Chairman Thomas Murphy<\/a><\/strong> condemned the Chrysler bailout in 1979 as &#8220;a basic challenge to the philosophy of America.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That is, GM said this was darn-near unAmerican!<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting point.\u00a0 All of the key ingredients that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloggingstocks.com\/2008\/11\/15\/why-the-1979-chrysler-bailout-worked-temporarily\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Cohen <\/a><\/strong>said made the Chrysler bailout successful &#8212; including a new plan, new management, new technology, and some serious shared sacrifice &#8212; don&#8217;t seem to be part of the current $25 billion proposal.<\/p>\n<p>The oppositions to the bailout is mounting.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, as reported in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB122645259107919397.html?mod=googlenews_wsj\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/strong>, people just don&#8217;t trust American auto makers any more.\u00a0 That is, they think that auto industry management is a joke.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601109&amp;sid=ap8pS2oslvn0&amp;refer=home\" target=\"_blank\">quote<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There&#8217;s the feeling that next to financial services, automotive execs are the dumbest people in the world,&#8221; said <strong><a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwSearchNews( this ))\" href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Thomas+Stallkamp&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\">Thomas Stallkamp<\/a><\/strong>, a former <strong><a onmouseover=\"return escape( popwQuoteShort( this, '2251Q:US' ))\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/quote?ticker=2251Q%3AUS\">Chrysler<\/a><\/strong> president who worked at the car company when it received emergency government loans in 1980.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ah, there&#8217;s the rub.\u00a0 Why do people oppose the bailout?<\/p>\n<p>Because people think that auto management is incompetent.<\/p>\n<p>It is a bit like Bobby Jindal &#8212; the GOP&#8217;s newest and arguably smartest face &#8212; said about the Republican Party.\u00a0 Why did voters reject them?\u00a0 In his words, they were fired &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/Content\/Public\/Articles\/000\/000\/015\/803dbdbm.asp\" target=\"_blank\">with cause<\/a><\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>People rally around brands in trouble.\u00a0 And people rally around those who suffer from a brand in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>But it is hard to get people to rally around brands that are just stupid.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s bail out the auto industry.
