{"id":311,"date":"2008-12-10T04:11:43","date_gmt":"2008-12-10T11:11:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=311"},"modified":"2008-12-10T04:11:43","modified_gmt":"2008-12-10T11:11:43","slug":"money-for-nothing-ceo-compensation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=311","title":{"rendered":"Money for nothing &#8211; CEO compensation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In John, chapter twelve, verse eight, we have the famous quote from Jesus:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You will always have the poor with you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jesus was rebuking Judas and his criticism of Mary for wasting costly perfume in the washing of Jesus feet.\u00a0 (For those interested, I suggest <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/poserorprophet.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/06\/john-128-what-does-it-mean-to-always-have-the-poor-with-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Proseorprophet<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s analysis of the text.)\u00a0\u00a0 But today Jesus may just as likely have have said the same about the rich.\u00a0 Specifically, about rich CEOs.\u00a0 Even more specifically about rich, overpaid CEOs<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You will always have the obscenely overpaid CEOs with you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yup.\u00a0 Hard to argue with that one.\u00a0 And in today&#8217;s bailout, bankrupt economy the CEO compensation issue is getting a lot more attention.\u00a0 So it is interesting to read a spate of stories this week about CEO pay.\u00a0 First, there are the stories about CEOs passing up their &#8220;bonuses.&#8221; This, reported in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5hDoEn8Uu3hgHZTzv2bM03eLCUFCgD94USN4G0\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The chief executives of Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch &amp; Co. are going without bonuses for a year that has seen Wall Street ravaged by staggering losses, mass layoffs and the collapse of storied firms.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Morgan Stanley&#8217;s CEO John J. Mack is giving up a bonus for the second straight year, while Merrill Lynch &amp; Co. said its CEO John Thain also asked to go without the extra compensation for 2008 after reports surfaced he had sought as much as $10 million.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/business.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft alignnone size-medium wp-image-310\" style=\"float: left; margin: 8px;\" title=\"business\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/business-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/business-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/business-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/business.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Notice anything?\u00a0 They are passing up BONUSES!!\u00a0 That is what you get when you do something really, really, really super good, right?\u00a0 Their <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/business.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/business\/industry_sectors\/banking_and_finance\/article5311739.ece\" target=\"_blank\">regular compensation<\/a><\/strong>?\u00a0 $800k and $700k per year respectively plus perks of about half that.\u00a0 Oh, and they got <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/597\/story\/403528.html\" target=\"_blank\">signing bonuses<\/a><\/strong> when they were hired and tens of millions of dollars in earlier bonuses along the way while managing the companies into the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Still not bad for people presiding over failed institutions that nearly killed the global economy and had to be bailed out with billions American taxpayers&#8217; money, much of which will be paid by people now in elementary school who don&#8217;t even get an allowance.<\/p>\n<p>Which leads to the auto bailout and CEO compensation of the auto manufacturers.\u00a0 Jonathan Macey in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB122878233346989853.html\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/strong>, writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The failure of the General Motors board of directors to fire CEO Richard Wagoner provides a rare glimpse into the inner-workings of big-time corporate boards of directors. The sight is not pretty.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When Mr. Wagoner took the helm eight years ago the stock was trading at around $60 per share. The stock had fallen to around $11 per share <em>before<\/em> the current financial crisis. It&#8217;s now below $5 per share.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In 2007, Mr. Wagoner&#8217;s compensation rose 64% to almost $16 million in a year when the company lost billions. The board has been a staunch backer of Mr. Wagoner despite consistent erosion of market share and losses of $10.4 billion in 2005 and $2 billion in 2006.
