{"id":362,"date":"2009-06-17T07:18:30","date_gmt":"2009-06-17T14:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=362"},"modified":"2009-06-17T07:18:30","modified_gmt":"2009-06-17T14:18:30","slug":"creating-a-sense-of-urgency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=362","title":{"rendered":"Creating a sense of urgency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Creating a sense of urgency in your life leads to success.\u00a0 And there&#8217;s a study out that proves it.\u00a0 A good friend of mine, Greg Schneiders, recently sent to me a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/16\/sports\/golf\/16study.html\" target=\"_blank\">NYTimes <\/a><\/strong>story about a study on the issue of motivation, fear, and something economists call &#8220;loss avoidance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The question is this &#8212; when your back is up against the wall and you MUST do something or risk losing, are you better at doing what you do than when you simply have an opportunity and CAN do something to win.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-363\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" title=\"national-lampoon-73\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/national-lampoon-73.jpg\" alt=\"national-lampoon-73\" width=\"223\" height=\"297\" \/>For the Wharton professors, question was this:\u00a0 &#8220;All other things being equal, is there a difference between a putt for a par and a putt for a birdie?&#8221;\u00a0 For folks not skilled in the rules and scoring of golf, a par is the number of shots set as a &#8220;standard&#8221; for a particular hole.\u00a0 A &#8220;birdie&#8221; is one less than par.\u00a0 So a hole that is set on the scorecard as a &#8220;par 4&#8221; is a hole that you&#8217;re expected to complete in four strokes or shots.\u00a0 If you do it in three, that&#8217;s a birdie.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the question.\u00a0 Is there any difference between a 4 foot birdie putt and a 4 foot par putt?<\/p>\n<p>Apparently there is.\u00a0 According to the study:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Even the world\u2019s best pros are so consumed with avoiding bogeys that they make putts for birdie discernibly less often than identical-length putts for par, according to <strong><a title=\"The paper.\" href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1419027\">a coming paper by two professors<\/a><\/strong> at the <strong><a title=\"More articles about University of Pennsylvania\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/u\/university_of_pennsylvania\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">University of Pennsylvania<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Wharton School. After analyzing laser-precise data on more than 1.6 million Tour putts, they estimated that this preference for avoiding a negative (bogey) more than gaining an equal positive (birdie) \u2014 known in economics as loss aversion \u2014 costs the average pro about one stroke per 72-hole tournament, and the top 20 golfers about $1.2 million in prize money a year.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What does that mean?\u00a0 It means that faced with two identical putts &#8212; one for birdie and one for par &#8212; the pros are more likely to make the par putt because they have to and miss the birdie putt because &#8230; well &#8230; because they can.\u00a0 According to\u00a0 <a title=\"More articles about Justin Leonard\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/l\/justin_leonard\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Justin Leonard<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhen putting for birdie, you realize that, most of the time, it\u2019s acceptable to make par. When you\u2019re putting for par, there\u2019s probably a greater sense of urgency, so therefore you\u2019re willing to be more aggressive in order not to drop a shot.
