U.S. is alphabetic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I spend a lot of time in airports.\u00a0 Not as much as <a href=\"http:\/\/mygloss.com\/buzz\/2009\/12\/06\/george-clooney-why-we-love-him\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>George Clooney<\/strong><\/a> in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theupintheairmovie.com\/?gclid=COfKsZfszp4CFcZM5Qod3Fxcrg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Up in the Air<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t like traveling as much as this fellow seems to and I find negotiating airports more of a pain-in-the ass than comforting.\u00a0\u00a0 But in a recent trip I toured through three major U.S. airports and two major European ones and was reminded of a curious difference between the two.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-449\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" title=\"Airport 7\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Airport-7.jpg\" alt=\"Airport 7\" width=\"358\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Airport-7.jpg 640w, https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Airport-7-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/>European airports list departures by time.\u00a0 When are you leaving?\u00a0 Look up on the board and scroll down for the time.\u00a0 There it is.\u00a0 Got a 9:45 am flight out of <strong>Berlin<\/strong>?\u00a0 Just need to find those flights listed between 9:40 and 9:50 am.\u00a0 It will be there somewhere in betwixt the flights to <strong>Cracaw <\/strong>and <strong>Geneva<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. airports list departures by destination.\u00a0 Where are you going?\u00a0 Washington DC?\u00a0 That\u2019s easy.\u00a0 Go to the end of the listings in the WXYZ space and find where you\u2019re going and then work backwards for the time and gate.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. system makes a helluvalot more sense to me.\u00a0 First, I ALWAYS know WHERE I\u2019m going.\u00a0 But there\u2019s a lot of times I don\u2019t quite remember when.\u00a0 I can get confused about whether the flight is at 2:30 pm or 3:30 pm but I NEVER get confused about whether I\u2019m going to <strong>Newark <\/strong>or <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong>.\u00a0 Then there\u2019s the issue of delayed flights.\u00a0 You check in and they tell you that your flight is going to be an hour late.\u00a0 Do you look for the \u2018correct\u2019 time or do you look for the revised time?<\/p>\n<p>Very confusing.<\/p>\n<p>I can only think that the European airports carried over the vestiges of the old train station arrival and departure boards.\u00a0 You know.\u00a0 Those huge mechanical panels that every minute do the \u201cclick-click-click\u201d thing in which plates unfold from the middle to amazingly display a curious combination of yellow and white type on black that gives the latest listings of trains, cities, and gates.<\/p>\n<p>Now it is a series of luminescent flat screen panels dangling from the roof \u2026 but the listing by time remains.<\/p>\n<p>And I still can\u2019t remember when that flight is supposed to leave.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I spend a lot of time in airports.\u00a0 Not as much as George Clooney in \u201cUp in the Air.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t like traveling as much as this fellow seems to and I find negotiating airports more of a pain-in-the ass than comforting.\u00a0\u00a0 But in a recent trip I toured through three major U.S. airports and&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[40],"tags":[152,41,5],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/446"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=446"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/446\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":450,"href":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/446\/revisions\/450"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=446"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=446"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=446"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
