{"id":480,"date":"2010-01-22T16:55:05","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T23:55:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=480"},"modified":"2010-01-22T17:03:49","modified_gmt":"2010-01-23T00:03:49","slug":"experts-and-commentators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=480","title":{"rendered":"Experts and commentators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I work in a field that is awash with experts.\u00a0 Indeed, seems there are more experts in what I do,\u00a0 than people.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m talking about social media but I probably could be talking about anything.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.penn-olson.com\/2010\/01\/05\/how-to-avoid-social-media-snake-oil-salesmen\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-481\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" title=\"experts\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/experts.jpg\" alt=\"experts\" width=\"205\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/experts.jpg 205w, https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/experts-184x300.jpg 184w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/>Roderick Low<\/strong><\/a> posted a good summary of the dilemma (along with some good prescriptions) in which he cites the blog Broadstuff that noted given current growth projections &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;by 2012, we would have as many as 30 million \u2019social media experts\u2019 plying their trade globally.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wow.\u00a0 30 million experts.\u00a0 That is a lot of experts.\u00a0 I wonder who they will be working for.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, based on what I see a good percentage of today&#8217;s experts don&#8217;t have clients.\u00a0 What are we going to do with all these experts?<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me the second area of job title explosion:\u00a0 commentators.<\/p>\n<p>With all the new media out there we&#8217;ve got more than you can shake a stick at.\u00a0 Actually a lot of them you&#8217;d just as soon hit with a stick not just shake it at them.\u00a0 But given the explosion of everyday commentators you&#8217;d only end up playing &#8220;whack-a-mole&#8221; (how is that for tortured stream of conscious imagery?)<\/p>\n<p>Just one thing about those commentators.\u00a0 A lot of them never really have had any direct experience in what they are commenting on.\u00a0 This is particularly true in politics.\u00a0 Have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rushlimbaugh.com\/home\/today.guest.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rush Limbaugh<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/3036677\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Keith Oberman<\/strong><\/a> ever run for office?\u00a0 Ever worked in government?\u00a0 Ever practiced constitutional law?\u00a0 No but they sure can comment on it all.<\/p>\n<p>Experts with no clients &#8230; commentators with no experience.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a suggestion.\u00a0 We follow our brethren in sports.\u00a0 Watch a football show.\u00a0 Maybe one or two laymen but they are always teamed up with former coaches and players &#8212; that is, people who have actually had experience in doing what they are commenting on.<\/p>\n<p>Experts who actually do work.\u00a0 Commentators who actually know from experience what they are talking about.<\/p>\n<p>What a concept.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I work in a field that is awash with experts.\u00a0 Indeed, seems there are more experts in what I do,\u00a0 than people.
