The True Nature of Trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a buzz around a recent report by the public relations firm <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edelman.com\">Edleman<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 For ten long years they have invested in something they have called the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edelman.com\/trust\/2010\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>trust barometer<\/strong><\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 Think of it like a trust weather vane.\u00a0 Where is trust going?\u00a0 How strong is that wind?\u00a0 Who becoming more trustworthy?\u00a0 Who is becoming less?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-497\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" title=\"trust1\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/trust1.jpg\" alt=\"trust1\" width=\"310\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/trust1.jpg 493w, https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/trust1-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/>Now I&#8217;ll admit that I&#8217;m skeptical about all such research.\u00a0 One reason is that I do that for a living.\u00a0 I know how tricky it is to measure ANYTHING related to public opinion, much less values and beliefs.\u00a0 Measuring trust is right up there with predicting the path of nanoparticles.\u00a0 In fact &#8212; to carry the quantum physics analogy further &#8212; you can spend a lot of time just <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ragan.com\/ME2\/Audiences\/dirmod.asp?sid=&amp;nm=&amp;type=MultiPublishing&amp;mod=PublishingTitles&amp;mid=5AA50C55146B4C8C98F903986BC02C56&amp;tier=4&amp;id=1C9092A826EC44D89584150035E31E91&amp;AudID=3FF14703FD8C4AE98B9B4365B978201A\" target=\"_blank\">defining what you mean by the word trust<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But I digress.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent report by the Edelman Trust Barometer is a juicy &#8220;man bites dog&#8221; story.<\/p>\n<p>Amidst the growth of social networking and consumer generated content, <a href=\"http:\/\/adage.com\/article?article_id=141972\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>people are trusting their friends LESS, not MORE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, you read that right.\u00a0 All that money and time we spend on peer-to-peer communication has resulted in people thinking less and less of each other.<\/p>\n<p>Seems that the more and better I get to know you, the more I realize that you&#8217;re not smarter than me.\u00a0 You&#8217;re just another Joe.\u00a0 Warts and all.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps even worse.\u00a0 With all your tweets, and posts and streams I come to the startling realization that you are even MORE screwed up than I AM.\u00a0 And I&#8217;m a really screwed up person!\u00a0 I should know.<\/p>\n<p>Because I know myself only too well, I don&#8217;t trust myself with a lot of things.\u00a0 Now I&#8217;ve read your blog, your <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\">Facebook <\/a><\/strong>page, your <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\">Twitter <\/a><\/strong>stream and I&#8217;m not impressed.\u00a0 I thought you had it all together.\u00a0 But you sound a lot like me.\u00a0 Why the hell should I trust you?<\/p>\n<p>I write all this knowing people who read this blog are saying the same thing about me.\u00a0 They read this and say &#8212; &#8220;who the hell is this guy?&#8221;\u00a0 Why the hell am I listening to him?\u00a0 I&#8217;m perfectly fine with that.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s the lesson of social media.\u00a0 We knew it before blogs and MySpace pages.\u00a0 Familiarity can indeed breed contempt.<\/p>\n<p>And that was the mistake all along.\u00a0 The big myth in social media was that peer-to-peer communication would elevate everyone.\u00a0 That there would be wisdom created in crowds.\u00a0 That trust would emerge as we all got to know each other.<\/p>\n<p>But something different happened along with way.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t change.\u00a0 We remained ourselves, just with a lot more avenues to express that.\u00a0 And we exposed the true nature of trust.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t trust the shallow frat boy.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t trust the occasional remark.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t trust just any old joe just because he or she is my age and looks like me.\u00a0\u00a0 I don&#8217;t trust folks shilling for that latest cause.<\/p>\n<p>I trust people who don&#8217;t look at me as a customer, a potential sale, or a Linked In connection.<\/p>\n<p>I trust people who look at me as a person, a human being, and a friend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a buzz around a recent report by the public relations firm Edleman.\u00a0 For ten long years they have invested in something they have called the &#8220;trust barometer.&#8221;\u00a0 Think of it like a trust weather vane.\u00a0 Where is trust going?\u00a0 How strong is that wind?\u00a0 Who becoming more trustworthy?\u00a0 Who is becoming less?
