{"id":515,"date":"2010-03-02T11:33:38","date_gmt":"2010-03-02T18:33:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=515"},"modified":"2010-03-02T13:10:31","modified_gmt":"2010-03-02T20:10:31","slug":"more-human-and-political-insight-from-my-therapist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=515","title":{"rendered":"More human and political insight from my therapist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let me be clear.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not in therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I should be.\u00a0 Nothing wrong with it.\u00a0 Just not for me right now.<\/p>\n<p>By &#8220;my therapist&#8221; I refer to my beloved and longsuffering wife the social worker and therapist who explained to me and for all of us the real story behind the Tiger Woods &#8216;apology&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-516\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" title=\"obama-carex-inset-community\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/obama-carex-inset-community.jpg\" alt=\"obama-carex-inset-community\" width=\"162\" height=\"114\" \/>Recently she enlightened me on another recent event &#8211; the President&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/communities\/theoval\/post\/2010\/02\/obama-and-republicans-agree-in-insurance-reform----but-how\/1\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>health care reform summit<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Did you see it?\u00a0 Any of it?\u00a0 I found it fascinating and apparently others did as well.\u00a0 There was so much interest that it crashed some of the sites that were carrying it live.<\/p>\n<p>If you did see it you may remember the opening by President Obama and his desire to focus on the positive things they can agree on.<\/p>\n<p>Focus on the positive.\u00a0 Talk about things upon which we all can agree.<\/p>\n<p>It went down hill from there.\u00a0 Apparently the one thing they couldn&#8217;t agree on was to focus on what they agreed on.\u00a0 What they did seem to agree on was sniping, digs, invectives, and occasional ad hominems &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courierpress.com\/news\/2010\/mar\/02\/no-headline---02a10letters\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>typical political talking points<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As my wife explained it, this was (like the Tiger episode) therapy in motion.\u00a0 Again, let me paraphrase:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>It looked like some of the first sessions you have when you are working with dysfunctional families, spouses, or parents with their children.\u00a0 You always start with asking them to identify positive things about each other.\u00a0 It never works.\u00a0 Never.\u00a0\u00a0 Every time they come back with criticisms.\u00a0\u00a0 You&#8217;re not five minutes into the session and people are screaming at each other, letting loose f-bombs and a host of\u00a0 &#8220;asshole&#8221;, &#8220;jerk&#8221;, &#8220;bitch&#8221; commentary.\u00a0 They just have all this pent up anger and hate for each other.\u00a0 They want &#8212; no, they need &#8212; to get all that stuff off their chests and on the table for everyone &#8212; at least the &#8216;independent&#8217; therapist &#8212; to see.\u00a0 They can&#8217;t help it.\u00a0 They just have to go negative before they can begin getting to the positive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The problem with the President is that he didn&#8217;t do this sooner and didn&#8217;t do it long enough.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t do therapy in one session.\u00a0 You only get people to move over time, little by little.\u00a0 You have to wear them down.\u00a0 If the President had done this twice a week for six months, I bet he&#8217;d have gotten folks to open up and talk about those positives. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But like therapy, this stuff takes time.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My therapist!\u00a0 She&#8217;s not only beautiful but absolutely brilliant!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let me be clear.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not in therapy.
