{"id":522,"date":"2010-04-13T18:57:50","date_gmt":"2010-04-14T01:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=522"},"modified":"2010-04-14T02:40:48","modified_gmt":"2010-04-14T09:40:48","slug":"ode-to-humility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=522","title":{"rendered":"Ode to Humility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blessed are the humble.<\/p>\n<p>Really?\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to be kidding.\u00a0 Humility?\u00a0 Look around.\u00a0 Any humble brands out there?\u00a0 Any humble organizations?\u00a0 Politicians?\u00a0 Humility has gotten short shrift in popular culture.\u00a0 And looking around you&#8217;d think it in short supply.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;d be right.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-547\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" title=\"humility_1\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/humility_1.jpg\" alt=\"humility_1\" width=\"283\" height=\"287\" \/>But it is a value that I&#8217;d argue is at the heart of friendship and brand relationship.\u00a0 It is the connective tissue that allows a brand or an individual to bond with an individual or idea.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly eighteen months ago a good friend and expert in crisis  communications, Fred Garcia, wrote this back in <a href=\"http:\/\/logosinstitute.net\/blog\/2008\/01\/02\/a-dollop-of-humility\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>September  2008<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; a dollop of humility tempers other  attributes, and makes a leader  even stronger. Humility helps a leader  to recognize that maybe &#8211; just  maybe &#8211; he or she might be wrong; that  there may be other valid  perspectives; that he or she doesn\u2019t have to  be the smartest person in  every room, at every meeting.\u00a0 Humility also  helps leaders to connect with others up, down, and  across the chain of  command; to build organizations and cultures that  more likely thrive;  to understand the perspectives of other  stakeholders.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I thought about Fred&#8217;s post when listening to a recent podcast on the same subject.\u00a0 The title of the podcast was &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oneplace.com\/ministries\/Let_My_People_Think\/archives.asp?bcd=2\/27\/2010\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Winsome Humility<\/strong><\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 A warning to those who may want to listen.\u00a0 It has a religious bent.\u00a0 But that bent shouldn&#8217;t distract from the wisdom that Dr. John Dixson gives about this simple concept that is at the heart of every strong character.<\/p>\n<p>Dixson&#8217;s definition of humility is simple: Humility is the noble ability to hold your power for the good of others.<\/p>\n<p>He goes on to argue that humility makes very a lot of sense.\u00a0 It is practical.\u00a0 One person can&#8217;t know everything.\u00a0 It is attractive.\u00a0 It is part of being kind.\u00a0 It is effective.\u00a0 It allows you &#8212; as Fred pointed out &#8212; to develop strong relationships.<\/p>\n<p>I find it ironic that in the new media world we see so many people (and brands) succumb to baser instincts and use the new media channels to bark, preen, preach, and lecture.<\/p>\n<p>When the real opportunity is in using these new channels to do something much more attractive.<\/p>\n<p>Be humble.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blessed are the humble.
