{"id":646,"date":"2010-10-07T15:39:09","date_gmt":"2010-10-07T22:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=646"},"modified":"2010-10-07T15:40:36","modified_gmt":"2010-10-07T22:40:36","slug":"when-good-isnt-good-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/?p=646","title":{"rendered":"When Good Isn&#8217;t Good Enough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The history of brands is littered with good &#8212; sometimes even great &#8212; products that failed.\u00a0 Can you spell (or remember) Betamax?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/fenty.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-647\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" title=\"fenty\" src=\"http:\/\/jerrysjuicebar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/fenty.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"153\" \/><\/a>A recent case in point can be found in the litter of the aftermath of what many seem as the most colorful political primaries in record.\u00a0 Amidst scandal, write-ins, and Tea Party surprises there was the DC mayoral race.\u00a0 A race lost by incumbent Mayor Adrian Fenty.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Fenty.\u00a0 Young.\u00a0 Smart.\u00a0 Aggressive.<\/p>\n<p>And effective.<\/p>\n<p>By any objective standard he was a good mayor (and we&#8217;ve not had many in the three decades I&#8217;ve been here!).<\/p>\n<p>He inherited a budget mess, and fixed it.\u00a0 He said he would take over the city&#8217;s schools and make them work.\u00a0 And he did!\u00a0 He reduced crime, kept spending in check, modernized city services, and boosted private investments.<\/p>\n<p>And he lost.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>Why?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>There were some immediate issues.\u00a0 He addressed the budget by cutting jobs and fixed the schools by laying off teachers.\u00a0 Not very popular in a city with a high unemployment rate.\u00a0 But the real reasons were at the same time ephemeral and substantive.\u00a0 It was a question of attitude.<\/div>\n<div>Fenty&#8217;s intensity and intellect often led to arrogance.\u00a0 His doggedness sometimes became insular.\u00a0 His purity could be strident.<\/div>\n<div>In the end, his base deserted him.\u00a0 And he lost.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There are plenty of brand lessons in Mayor Fenty&#8217;s fall from grace.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>One being that just because you&#8217;re &#8216;good&#8217; doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;re &#8216;good enough&#8217; for the next choice or purchase.\u00a0 Substance matters.\u00a0 But substance isn&#8217;t everything.\u00a0 You can be &#8216;right&#8217; and still have your customers think you are &#8216;wrong&#8217;.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Remember the advocates, supporters, purchasers, and fans that got you where you are.\u00a0 Be nice to them.\u00a0 Maybe even listen.\u00a0 Ok, at least pretend to listen.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t expect that they&#8217;ll follow and support you just because you think you&#8217;re doing the right thing &#8230; just because you&#8217;re so &#8230; good.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Just being good isn&#8217;t good enough.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The history of brands is littered with good &#8212; sometimes even great &#8212; products that failed.\u00a0 Can you spell (or remember) Betamax?
