So you have a New Year’s resolution? \u00a0I do. \u00a0And it was inspired in no small measure by my daughter who is resolved to focus in 2012 on “quality, not quantity” and my son whose resolution is less tech and more touch.<\/p>\n

This year I’m resolved to change how I think about people – people I know, people I see, and the people I never see but reach through a career in communications.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>I resolve to not think of people based on what they do. \u00a0I don’t agree with the old saying “you are what you eat.” \u00a0People are much more than their diet. \u00a0And I’ll dare to challenge Aristotole that a person is “what they do every day.” \u00a0A person is more than a collection of habits. \u00a0I resolve not to think of people based on what they have. \u00a0People are more than rich or poor. \u00a0They are more than their medical condition or position of authority. \u00a0I resolve to not define people by what they can do for me. \u00a0People are more than clients or business partners or even friends.<\/p>\n

In business and life it is so easy to think of people as a commodity, a label, a category. \u00a0The people – and businesses – that I admire and respect most think better than that. \u00a0They don’t view their customers, neighbors, and friends that way.<\/p>\n

So here’s a resolution for 2012.<\/p>\n

A resolution to always remember that every person is sacred. \u00a0And regardless of their habits, possessions or what they can do for me or us … each merits respect, patience, understanding, mercy and love.<\/p>\n
